Grand Seigneur Hotel

Grand Seigneur Hotel

Our hotel is located in an old inn, near the old city wall, on the historical peninsula Eminönü. Our hotel building is 107 years old. It belongs to our family since 1936 and has been used for different functions. Our hotel restoration took 3 years. İt is decorated with handy-crafts, engravings, forged iron, paintings, glassware, etc, which are reflecting Ottoman naval force history and different periods of Turkey's history. Your home in İstanbul is built in the style of a manor and it has three storeys; 21 rooms (2 of them are suits) and 42 people can accommodate in our hotel. From each floor “ which are accessible by lifts “ and rooms, you can see very impressive naturel scenery of the Bosphorous, Galata Tower, Dolmabahçe Palace, and Topkapı Palace. (check our online webcame on sunset J) Our hotel took his name from the nickname of the first Ottoman naval Capitain Hızır Hayrettin Paşa ( 1466 ? 1476 - 1546 ) .During his period, Europeans called him "Barbe Rose" (in French words) because of his red beard. Gradually, these words changed and became ''Barbaros''. At the same time, due to his great success in several wars - especially in preveze ( 1538 )he was also called as ''Grand Seigneur'' in Mediterrean. Although he deserved this name, unfortunately Barbaros could never use the name of ''Grand Seigneur' because in Ottoman Empire, only the Sultan could be named as “Seigneur”, ''Great'' or ''Grand''. The Sultan of the time was Süleyman the Magnificent and he was also called as "Grand Turc" by the Europeans. For this reason, we decided to name our hotel after the first Ottoman Naval Captain, the Grand SEIGNEUR.
